Austin Still the No. 1 Fastest-Growing Large City in America

Once again, for the second year in a row, Austin has come out on top as the fastest growing big city in the United States. A 2017 study by personal finance website, WalletHub, took into account the population statistics of 515 cities along with the 14 key economic measures which indicate the direction and pace of a city’s rate of growth. For years now, Austin has been topping the pile in a number of top-ten type surveys which look at economic and social prosperity. These studies confirm to us what we already know: Austin is a great place to live!

WalletHub compared a range of small, medium, and large cities, deriving accurate measurements of each city’s growth rate over a seven-year period. WalletHub did this by exploring key indicators including the population growth and the educated population growth, while key economic metrics included the median household income, median house price, unemployment rate, and the numbers of businesses, start-ups, and investments.

Austin is the fastest-growing big city in America but came in 9th on WalletHub’s overall list, which didn’t just encompass the country’s major urban centers, but covered small- and medium-sized cities too. Interestingly, Texas was represented four times in the overall top ten, with suburban Frisco as the number one, and Midland and McKinney both showing fast growth rates worthy of top ten appearances.

Austin’s Meteoric Growth

Austin stood out as the number one fastest-growing large city in the United States, which should come as no surprise to anyone who lives here or is associated with real estate in our fair city. Over the past two decades, we’ve seen increasing numbers of young people flock to be a part of a lively, friendly, and fun social scene which defends it’s right to “keep Austin weird.”

This influx of young professionals changed the landscape of Austin and became one of the key drivers which revolutionized our real estate industry. It doesn’t look like it is about to stop anytime soon either. Now, Austin has a huge catchment of people who are moving here from broader and broader geographical areas.

It’s like the ball started rolling nearly 20 years ago and it self-perpetuates: people come because Austin is good; Austin is good because people come. We keep hitting these top ten lists as, steadily, the entire country is beginning to get switched on to what we Austinites have known all along: Austin is a really great place to live.
