Lake Travis is a large lake with 270 miles of shoreline on the Colorado River in Austin, Texas. The Mansfield Dam was created to contain floodwaters and this formed Lake Travis. Because Lake Travis was formed for the purpose of containing flood waters, it holds the largest storage capacity of the seven reservoirs in the chain known as Highland Lakes. The other Highland Lakes reservoirs on the Colorado River include: Lake Buchanan, Inks Lake, Lake LBJ, Lake Austin, Lake Marble Falls, and Lady Bird Lake.

Lake Travis can hold up to 256 billion gallons of floodwaters, so it helps significantly in managing downstream flooding. The Mansfield Dam was originally known as the Marshall Ford Dam. It was built across a deep canyon at Marshall Ford, a river crossing settlement, after a major flood in 1938. It is still referred to as the Marshall Ford Dam by the Corps of Engineers. The name changed to Mansfield in 1941 after U.S. Rep. J.J. Mansfield took part in the structure’s development. The lake is now used for flood control, water supply, power generation, and outdoor recreation.
