Round Rock, TX

Round Rock is located in Williamson County, Texas as part of the Austin-Round Rock-San Marcos Metropolitan Statistical Area. Austin is one of the most popular cities in the state of Texas. Round Rock is about 20 miles north of downtown Austin, so it was once a big-time bedroom community for those who wanted to work in Austin and drive home to a quiet town, with more affordable homes for sale, at a comfortable distance away from work.

Round Rock began as a quaint community formed on Brushy Creek in 1851, near a large rock that was located in the middle of the creek. The first postmaster to be selected decided to name the community Brushy and the creek would be called Brushy Creek. However, in 1854, the postmaster decided a new name was in order, and suggested it be named after the now famous round rock that was located in Brushy Creek. Jesse Chisholm crossed the creek with his cattle at the rock, and the route he traveled on became known as the Chisholm Trail. Most of the old buildings of this area have actually been preserved and are located in what is now known as “Old Town”. Another famous happening here in Round Rock was the Sam Bass Shootout. Sam Bass was an old bandit from the 1870s who robbed trains. Texas Rangers followed Bass to Round Rock after he and his gang robbed the Fort Worth-to-Cleburne train. When he tried to make a run for it, he was shot and killed. This shootout is recreated each year during the Fourth of July “Frontier Days” celebration downtown. After Interstate 35 was established, Round Rock flourished into the largest city in Williamson County. It became a bedroom community for the city of Austin in the 1990s, but during the late nineties, Dell placed its headquarters in Round Rock, supplying jobs to 16,000.

It is located on both sides of the Balcones Escarpment fault line. So part of Round Rock is located east of Interstate Highway 35 known as Blackland Prairie where the soil is fertile and black. The other part of Round Rock lies to the west side where the terrain is kerst-like and hilly with little topsoil and higher elevations in the Texas Hill Country.

Money Magazine named Round Rock as the seventh best American small city to live in 2008. Round Rock was the only Texas city to make it to the top ten of that list. Then, in 2009, CNN listed Round Rock as the second fastest growing city in the country with a hefty 8.2-percent population boom for the previous year. Round Rock is known for its great schools as well. The Round Rock Independent School District, as a whole, has been “recognized” by the Texas Education Agency in 2010. Not only that, but several schools were given the highest possible “exemplary” rating in 2010. These schools include: Westwood High school, Canyon Vista, Walsh and Cedar Valley middle schools, Spicewood, Forest North, Caraway, Brushy Creek, Laurel Mountain, Fern Bluff, Canyon Creek, Great Oaks, Teravista, Cactus Ranch, Sommer, Deep Wood, Robertson, Pond Springs, Live Oak, Old Town, Jollyville, Forest Creek, Blackland Prairie, Union Hill, and Gattis elementary schools.
