Westlake is a stunning suburb tucked away in the depths of Austin’s natural beauty to the west of downtown Austin. The area of Austin that is served by Eanes Independent School District is all known as Westlake, among popular areas like: West Lake Hills, Rollingwood, Lost Creek and Rob Roy. Westlake real estate covers about 31 square miles of the Austin area and is just ten minutes from the downtown district. The natural scenery surrounding the homes and subdivisions within the community awards residents with breathtaking views right outside of their windows.
The Westlake area takes you on a journey through winding roads along Austin’s rolling hills. Every type of architecture is represented throughout Westlake’s neighborhoods from traditional to Tuscan homes and the more contemporary styles. There are homes for sale that have been in the area for decades along with new construction ready to be personalized to fit any home buyer’s wants and needs. Some homes have prestigious hilltop locations while others possess waterfront views on Lake Austin, so the options you can choose from are unreal. The hilltop sunrises alone would be worth the move to Westlake.
Westlake is served by one of the most sought after school districts in the Austin area. Eanes Independent School District serves about 8,000 students at six elementary schools, two middle schools, and one high school. For the year 2014-15, all nine campuses were rated “Met Standard” by the Texas Education Agency, the highest achievable rating for that year. Students consistently score well above state average on the SAT and both state and national averages on the ACT college readiness exams. The district proudly boasts an incredible 99-percent of its students enrolling into college upon graduation. Almost all of the schools (7 out of 9) in the district have been recognized as National Blue Ribbon Schools. Eanes Independent School District also holds the lowest tax rate of any school district in the area, contrary to popular belief.
Local to Westlake, there are several country clubs, gyms, fitness centers, and outdoor recreational opportunities for residents to enjoy. Austin Country Club was founded in 1899 making it one of the oldest clubs in Texas. This club has an 18-hole golf course designed by Pete Dye, a Harvey Penick learning center, 10 tennis courts, a heated swimming pool, 57 boat slips, a large clubhouse, various dining areas, a large ballroom and separate locker rooms for men and women. Another club located nearby is Barton Creek Country Club. This impressive club features four championship courses, two designed by Tom Fazio (Fazio Foothills and Fazio Canyons) and one designed by Ben Crenshaw and Bill Coore (Crenshaw Cliffside). The other course has an Arnold Palmer design and is known as Palmer Lakeside. Barton Creek Country Club offers some of the best golf in the state, exquisite restaurants, Tranquility Lounge spa, 11 well-lit tennis courts and programs for kids, so all ages and skill levels are welcome.
The Barton Creek Greenbelt is a local hiking spot and is considered the seventh best hiking trail in Texas, beginning at Zilker Park and ending in the Woods of Westlake subdivision. The terrain of the greenbelt is diverse, so adventurous locals come out for lots of different outdoor activities including: rock climbing, hiking, caving, cliff diving, kayaking, tubing and mountain biking. The large limestone cliffs are excellent for rock climbing and are located all throughout the greenbelt. Airmen’s Cave is the longest cave in Travis County for cavers to explore, and it has scheduled openings for guided exploration. Lake Austin is popular for boating and fishing as well, and is known for having a good stock of largemouth bass. There are many other places throughout Austin and surrounding areas for activities like these with several golf courses, lakes, parks, mountains, canyons, caves, rivers, nature preserves, gardens, and surprisingly more.
Westlake is also conveniently located near plenty of shopping and dining. Austin has two major shopping hubs centers and one of them is actually located within the Westlake region. Barton Creek shopping mall is a great place to go for all of your retail shopping needs and cravings. There are over 180 specialty shops from fashion to jewelry and sporting goods. Stroll through the climate controlled shopping mall on days when the weather is a bit too much for you to bare. There’s nothing like the smell of Auntie Anne’s Pretzels, perfume, and your favorite songs playing in the background. Another shopping center is The Village at Westlake. This is an expansive shopping center where you can take care of all of your errands in one spot. One of the two local grocery stores, HEB, is located here, as well as Starbucks, several delicious places to eat, banks, beauty stores, sporting goods and more. These shopping opportunities cover just about everything, but they aren’t even half of what is available for locals to explore.
There’s something about this rural community that draws you near. The friendly people, phenomenal scenery, choice location, and top-rated schools create a superior place to call home. With the heart of Austin only a short drive away, the opportunities in Westlake are seemingly endless. The rural atmosphere creates a beautiful seclusion away from the hustle and bustle of the major city, but those big-city amenities are only a few blocks away.
